Samos 14. – 28. Mai 2007

Vom 14. bis 28. Mai 2007 besuchten wir die griechische Insel Samos.

Es ging uns dabei nicht um die Erkundung spezieller Regionen, wir wollten vielmehr versuchen, die gesamte Insel abzudecken. Samos zeichnet sich durch einen sehr großen Artenreichtum aus, wobei jedoch keine Art sehr häufig anzutreffen zu sein scheint.

So konnten wir beispielsweise auf Zypern im Jahr 2006 Hunderte Johannisechsen (Ablepharus k. kitaibelii) finden, auf Samos hingegen in den 14 Tagen insgesamt nur ein knappes Dutzend. Auch das Europäische Schlangenauge (Ophisops elegans macrodactylus) war auf Samos nicht so weit verbreitet und zahlreich wie auf Zypern.

Wie uns Einheimische erzählten, hatte es 2007 im Januar und Februar kaum geregnet, was relativ unüblich für diese Region ist. Während unserer Reise im Mai regnete es dafür an 5 Tagen, teilweise so stark, dass an eine Reptiliensuche nicht zu denken war.

An den restlichen Tagen war es meist sehr heiß, nachts oft windig. Auch tagsüber wehte vor allem an Berghängen teils starker Wind. Die Tageshöchsttemperaturen lagen zu Beginn unseres Aufenthaltes bei über 30°C, sanken während der Regentage auf 19°C und näherten sich in den letzten Tagen wieder an die 25°C – Marke an. Die Luftfeuchtigkeit war aufgrund des Regens relativ hoch.

Die Anzahl der gesehenen Exemplare ist wie folgt gegliedert:

Leider konnten wir nicht alle gesehenen Tiere fotografieren. Ärgerlicherweise konnten wir keine Aufnahmen von Natrix natrix persa, Natrix natrix tessellata, Malpolon monspessulanus inisgnitus und Dolichophis caspius machen, obwohl wir auch diese 4 Arten finden konnten.. Gerade bei der Würfelnatter (Natrix tessellata) ist dies besonders ärgerlich, konnten wir doch ein riesiges Tier von etwa 1,20m mit typischer Würfelzeichnung sichten.

Bei den überfahrenen Reptilien/Amphibien handelte es sich größtenteils um den Scheltopustik (Pseudopus apodus thracius).

Da die überfahrenen Reptilien meist nicht mehr zu erkennen waren, hielten wir es damals leider nicht für nötig, Fotos zu machen. So fehlen uns hier dummerweise die Aufnahmen.

Wir möchten in diesem Bericht keine detaillierten Angaben zu Verbreitungsschwerpunkten oder “Hot Spots“ machen.

Samos 14th – 28th May 2007

From May 14^th to 28^th 2007 we visited the Greek island Samos.

Our principal object was not the investigation of special regions, in fact we would like to cover the whole island. Samos is characterized by a huge biodiversity, whereas it seams that no species appears in a large quantity. In 2006 on Cyprus we could find for example a hundred of Snake-Eyed Skink (Ablepharus k. kitaibelii), whereas Samos we just found about a dozen in 14 days. Also the Snake-Eyed Lizard (Ophisops elegans macrodactylus) wasn’t as widespread and numerous on Samos as on Cyprus.

Locals told us that there wasn’t hardly any rain in January and February 2007. That’s relatively unusual for this region. In return it was raining for 5 days during our trip in May. Partly there was such a heavy rain that we not even thought of searching reptiles.

The remainig days were for the most parts very hot, in the night it was often windy. It was windy also during the day, especialy on the Mountain Sides. The maximum temperature during the day was across 30°C at the beginning of our stay, temperature decreased to 19°C over the period of rain and approached the 25°C limit in the last days of the trip. Because of the rain the humidity was on a high level.

Unfortunately we could not take pictures of all animals we saw. Infuriating we couldn’t take any pictures of Natrix natrix persa, Natrix natrix tessellata, Malpolon monspessulanus inisgnitus and Dolichophis caspius, even though we could find this 4 species, too. It is especially painful that we have no pictures from the Dice Snake (Natrix tessellata) because we saw a huge exemplar about 1,20m with the typical dice pattern.

The reptiles/amphibians dead on road were for the most parts European Glass Lizard (Pseudopus apodus thracius). For the most part it was Pseudopus apodus.

Sometimes we could observe this species in the evenings, sunbathing on the warm asphalt.

Because the crossed reptiles were almost not to recognize we thought that it was not necessary to take picture of them. Therefore unfortunately these pictures are now missing.
